It's
true...orbs are not ghosts and in no way should they be taken into consideration
as proof of a haunting. However, people commonly mistake what a "true" orb
really is for an airborne particle, or light reflection. An orb is not a piece
of dust or a reflection. A piece of dust is a piece of dust and a reflection is
a reflection.
So that leave the question of what exactly IS a true orb? Well, I think we can
all agree that it is some type of energy, but where does that energy come from?
There are a few ideas...
Ball lightning:
Ball lighting is fairly rare, but is a documented and re-creatable phenomena.
This stuff even seems to have a mind of its own, actually "chasing down" people.
In reality, its most likely seeking metal, but it does seem to be almost alive.

Piezo-electrical phenomena: This is basically where quartz and some other minerals when compressed will
"explode" into a sphere of energy. Like ball lightning, this has also be
recreated in a laboratory setting. Understandably, this phenomena will most
likely appear along fault lines, but can occur elsewhere.

Swamp Gas:
This has been a favorite red herring for UFO sightings for years, and its
closely tied in with will-o-the-wisps and St. Elmo's Fire. Basically what you've
got here is gases being emitted from rotting vegetation, which could appear to
be an orb.
Psychokinetic Energy: I've seen people who have higher than normal electrical charges seemingly create
"orbs." These people are often referred to as "SLIders." The term sliders come
from the name "Street Light Interference" but that is actually a misnomer as the
ability to affect street lights has pretty much been debunked. The modern
"SLIder" still has a higher "charge" but instead of streetlights, they will
affect watches, cars, and any other electrical appliances. SLIders have a bad
habit of blowing light bulbs and can rarely wear a watch without the battery
dying.

The sphere is the most stable form that energy can travel in. When considering
if something is a "true" orb, there a few things that will HELP, but aren't
guaranteed:
A true orb will not have an internal cell structure...so if you're seeing a
face, its most likely NOT an orb.
A true orb will be emitting its own light and perhaps even casting a shadow.
It will appear very dense and most often in motion. They can be seen with the
naked eye, and its extremely preferable that they ARE seen and not just captured
on film. In fact, if an orb is captured on a digital camera, the very low
likelihood of it being a true orb is even further diminished.
