News 11/3/08

We here at HPIR would like to say thank you to everyone who attended our Historic Guyandotte Candlelight Walking Tour this past weekend!

This was the first year for the historic walking tour and we had an amazing turn out of people, much more than expected. Thank you all for helping to make this tour such a success!! We had nearly 300 guestbook signatures!

We would also like to apologize to those who came to our tour expecting it to be a haunted tour. We are not exactly sure how this information came about, but again we do apologize to anyone who may have been misinformed and who were disappointed.

Next year we do plan to resume the Historic Guyandotte Candlelight Walking Tour during the weekend of the Guyandotte Civil War Days 20th Anniversary. We hope to see everyone again next year!

We also want to give a special thank you to the Guyandotte Civil War Days Committee and to the Guyandotte Branch Library.

THANK YOU EVERYONE!

JENKINS PLANTATION

From the Herald-Dispatch.com

GREENBOTTOM — U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall visited Jenkins Plantation Museum
Monday morning for a ceremony that kicked off a yearlong project to
preserve the historic home.

With federal support from Rahall's office over the past 20 years,
preserving the property along the Ohio River in Greenbottom has been
a joint effort between the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, the West
Virginia Department of Culture and History, the state Division of
Natural Resources and the Greenbottom Society.

Tours and public visitation already have ceased so that the project
can get under way. The Corps will work on the masonry and roof of the
pre-Civil War era house, preserve windows and address moisture
infiltration.

The preservation will hopefully be the first step in bringing the
house to life, followed by restoration and reconstruction, Rahall
said at the ceremony.

The work is intended to preserve the original characteristics of the
house, which is historic as the home of Confederate Brigadier Gen.
Albert Gallatin Jenkins. It's also recognized as a demonstration of
African-American craftsmanship, as it was built by slaves between
1830 and 1835 for Gen. Jenkins' father, William Jenkins.

The Corps hopes to complete the project in 12 to 18 months

Mothman & The Flatwoods Monster

 Article from WSAZ.com.....

A two-day conference this summer will
honor two of West Virginia's legendary creatures - Mothman and the
Flatwoods Monster.

The event is scheduled for Sept. 12-13 at the Alban Art Conference Center in St. Albans.

Several authors are among the scheduled speakers at the conference, along with Jeff Wamsley, curator of the Mothman Museum in Point Pleasant.

Mothman was the subject of numerous sightings in the Point Pleasant area for about a year beginning in November 1966.

Witnesses described a giant, winged creature with glowing red eyes.
The beast has been chronicled in books and a 2002 film.

A group of adults and youths reported seeing a 12-foot-tall metallic oddity that smelled of sulfur near Flatwoods on September 12, 1952

We are changing our name! Due to an issue with another group in WV we are now going to be known as Huntington Paranormal Investigations & Research. When we begin transforming our name this will not affect the website right away. We may change our web address in the future, but we will keep everyone posted on all changes and updates!

Update 10/29/2006

The investigation of the Jenkins House is complete and we are currently going over the gathered evidence and should hopefully have something to present soon.
On another note, we are going to have to limit our membership for right now, we are currently getting more membership requests than investigation requests and this is beginning to create a logistical nightmare. We want all of our members to have an opportunity to participate in some investigations, and since we are not currently getting a lot of requests to perform investigations, this is becoming difficult to accomplish.
As of today, 10/29/2006, we are temporarily suspending open membership, we will re-open it as soon as we get more investigations scheduled.

Update 10/25/2006

Coming up on the 27th, we will be investigating the Jenkins House itself.
We have been there a few times touring around the outside of the building, but this will be the first investigation done on the inside of the house itself.
Any and all evidence that we may collect will be posted soon after, check the investigations page for any new entries.
