"Sharing Huntington's History, One Ghost Story at a Time"

Investigation Location:

The Keith Albee Theater

Huntington, WV

November 2007

Historic Information:

The Keith-Albee Theatre in downtown Huntington, West Virginia opened to the public on May 7, 1928. Brothers A. B. and S. J. Hyman built the Keith and added it to their list of theaters along with the State, Orpheum and Huntington. The new theater was constructed under the supervision of vaudeville tycoons B. F. Keith and Edward Albee, becoming a part of their Keith-Albee circuit, the premier vaudeville tour on the East Coast of the United States.

The Haunting:

The hauntings that have been reported for many years by many patrons of the Keith Albee mostly concentrate on the women's restroom areas. Women have the feeling of someone watching or following them as they walk down the stairs into the basement restroom.

The restroom on the mezzanine is said to be haunted by a lady in red. She can sometimes be seen walking in and around the mezzanine restroom and around the stairs.

Other reported sightings from performers and employees, while on stage have seen shadowy figures pass by the balcony entrances high up in the balcony.

There have been several known deaths that occurred in the building. One of a man who was working in the electrical room of the basement while standing in water, he was electrocuted. Later on the body of a homeless person was found in the basement.

Investigation Overview:

The Keith Albee Theater is a massive building located in downtown Huntington. The Theater was quite a challenge to investigate but we gave it our all. With a team of over a dozen HPIR members and guests we made every attempt to find the truth behind all of the Keith Albee's famous stories.

The hauntings that have been reported for many years by many patrons of the Keith Albee mostly concentrate on the women's restroom areas.

From its maze of catacombs underneath to quite literally the roof, we explored every inch of the building that was safe enough to enter. We concentrated most of our EVP and video efforts on locations that are reported as active. We paid special attention to the women's restrooms both basement and mezzanine locations, and focused much effort on finding an explanation for all the "creepy feelings" that surround them. Maybe it is just the feeling of walking into a restroom that reminds you of an old Victorian mansion that makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck.

Investigation Results:

Unfortunately this investigation yielded absolutely nothing. We were very disappointed this much talked about haunted location did not turn up a single piece of evidence. Maybe we were there at the wrong time, or maybe its stories are just that. For now this palatial Theater continues to hold on tight to its secrets.
