Electronic Voice Phenomena

Electronic Voice Phenomena or EVP as it is commonly referred to,
is the capture of unexplained sounds such as voices on the audio track of a video recorder or audio recording device.

While most EVP's are captured randomly while performing other investigative actions, there are a few simple rules that will allow you to capture clearer, less dismissible EVP's.

1. Always begin your recording session by identifying where you are recording and at what time you are recording. End your recording in the same fashion.
What this does is verbally timestamps your recording for easier analysis later.

2. Always attempt to capture EVP's when it is as quiet as possible.

3. Ask the spirit a question such as "Is there anyone here that would like to speak with us?", then wait a few minutes to allow time for a response.
It is not common for you to hear the response, you are merely allowing for one. Some of the best EVP's have been captured in this manner.

4. While working with a partner, which you should be for safety reasons, only one of you should be performing the EVP sweep.
The person not performing the EVP sweep should remain as silent as possible unless it is absolutely necessary. This helps to prevent tainting of any evidence that you may acquire, and also allows for easier analysis later.

5. Allow the recorder to run unattended for a while. EVP's can and often times are captured while you are not in the area.
Pick a central location and leave your recorder there for about 20 minutes or so, you may find that you caught something later.

Here are some Examples of EVP's that were captured from various investigations at Lakin from John, our EVP Research Manager during his time with Huntington Paranormal Society.
